[westgate-info] Recent Fire Alarms.
Hello all,
In the recent weeks there have been a series of fire alarms in the high rise
building. Yesterday, October 16, 2008, the first in the evening was a result
of burnt food and the second, occurring at roughly 1:30am, was the result of
steam from a pressure relief valve. Two things in light of these two alarms:
1. Please remember that if you burn food in your apartment or are cooking food
that produces a fair amount of smoke in your apartment, do NOT open the door to
the hallway. The alarm in your apartment should not trigger the building
system. However, once the smoke detector in the hallway is activated the
building alarm will sound. Please air out your apartment by opening windows,
employing fans, and extinguishing the source before opening your apartment door
to the hallway. Also if in fact you have a fire in your apartment that you are
unable to extinguish or need to seek assistance, please do NOT hesitate to
leave your apartment and seek assistance regardless of the alarm.
2. Michael and I will be working with MIT Facilities to remedy the situation
involving the pressure valve since this is the second alarm for the same reason
within almost a week.
As always, should you have any questions, please let me know. I apologize for
the inconvenience and nuisance of the two alarms yesterday, but thank everyone
for leaving the building when instructed.
Have a great day,
Jason

[westgate-info] Missing Bicycle Frame
Hi all,
One of our residents left an old Schwinn bike frame next to the bike
racks by the back entrance of the high rise yesterday (Sunday Oct
12th) afternoon but it went missing. Hopefully someone took it by
mistake, assuming that it was an abandoned frame. If you know where
the frame is, it would be great if you could respond to this e-mail
and let me know so we can get it back to its owner. Thanks!
Although hopefully this one instance was just a case of mistaken
identity, this is nonetheless a good reminder to everyone that bike
theft does, unfortunately, regularly happen at Westgate and across the
MIT campus in general. We would like to remind everyone of a few
important security items.
- Always lock your bicycle.
- To report suspicious activity please dial 100 (NOT 911) from any
campus phone. This is the best and safest thing to do if you witness a
crime in progress.
- Remember to register your bicycle with the MIT Police if you
haven't already done so. This will help you identify your bike in the
unfortunate event that it is stolen. The registration process is
simple and available entirely online at the following website:
http://web.mit.edu/cp/www/bike_registration.htm
If you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns regarding
security, please contact us. We are interested to hear any feedback on
security in general here at Westgate. Thanks and we look forward to
working together to keep Westgate a safe and secure place to live!
Thanks,
Jason
[westgate-info] Heat & Hot Water Shutdown.
All Residents High Rise AND Low Rise
Hi
Please be aware on Thursday their will be a scheduled shutdown for Oct.
16th, starting at 9:00 am and finishing no later than 5:00 pm.
Their will be no Domestic Hot water or Heat
The purpose of the shutdown is to install what is called a "spool piece" in
the steam supply piping located in the boiler room.
This shutdown will allow us to do the relatively long shutdown, which is
expected to take no more than 8 hours, during what I hope will be mild
weather. The steam shutdown will mean no heat or domestic hot water for the
entire complex.
Once again shutdown for Oct. 16th, starting at 9:00 am and finishing no
later than 5:00 pm.
I'm also asking for backup dates of Oct. 21, 22 and 23 in the event that the
weather on the 16th is too cold to tolerate an 8 hour shutdown. With some
luck, one of those dates should be a mild enough day to allow for the
shutdown with minimal impact on the residents.
There will be a second shutdown to swap the spool piece for the meter
element when it arrives, which I will schedule for 2 hours, but should take
much less time. The date of that shutdown will depend on when the meter
element arrives and the weather.
Thank you

[westgate-info] Fire alarm & new residents.
Hello all,
I apologize for the tardiness of this notice. The fire alarm in the high rise
building and billowing steam from the side of the building yesterday (10/7/08)
was the result of a pressure release valve in the steam system releasing.
There are no anticipated negative impacts on the heating or the community.
Also, this does not count as the drill. If you should have any questions,
please let me know.
Below you will find an important message for new residents from Michael Collins:

[westgate-info] Potential Bus Stop Change.
Hello all,
If the exit from Amherst Alley to Vassar St. closes, as referenced in a previous
e-mail, the MIT Shuttle bus stop will temporarily be moved to Audrey St. Once
access to Vassar St. is regained, the bus stop will move back to its original
location along Amherst Alley. Signage should be present and I will keep you
updated as information comes to me. Thank you all for your patience.
Gratefully,
Jason

[westgate-info] Amherst Alley/Vassar St. Traffic Change.
Hello all,
On MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008, the exit from Amherst Alley to Vassar St. will be
limited to one lane. A police detail will be present to assist in directing
traffic. Also, two parking spaces, located near the exit, will be needed by
the contractors for the project.
On TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2008, weather permitting, the exit from Amherst Alley to
Vassar St. will either maintain one lane access or close.
In the event that the the exit is closed, vehicles leaving the Westgate gated
lot will need to take a left out of the lot and proceed up Amherst Alley to
Fowler St. in order to access Memorial Dr. Vassar St. can then be accessed
from Memorial Dr. via Aubrey St. We are currently working to have MIT Police
monitor Amherst Alley in order to better maintain the two way traffic access.
Signage will be placed along the roadway in order to direct drivers.
The exit is anticipated to reopen on Friday, October 10, 2008 barring any delays
with construction. Also, no work is currently scheduled to occur on Monday,
October 13, 2008.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. We
apologize for any inconvenience and they will be working to complete the work
as quickly as possible.
Sincerely,
Jason

[westgate-info] Fire Drills Coming.
Good Morning:
In the next few weeks Housing will be doing our annual fall fire drills
in our Residence Hall System. These drills are conducted to test the
system for accuracy and to monitor how well residents follow the building
evacuation plans. Please remember that whenever the alarm sounds, every
resident is required to exit the building. Please see below the standards
that the City of Cambridge Fire Department expects:
1) The city expects all residents to evacuate the building within 5 minutes.
The high-rises with 10 or more floors should be evacuated within 7 minutes.
2) Elevators can not be used to evacuate per state law. All residents must
use the stairs.
3) During the emergency evacuation, residents must exit the building using
the closest exit door to the stairwell; usually they are within the
stairwell. During an emergency alarm, residents are allowed and encouraged
to use the alarmed exit doors. `The alarms are installed to ensure security
but must be ignored during an emergency. Never go through the building to
exit the main front door. If the stair exit opens to a courtyard, exit the
courtyard immediately using the gate to the street. Courtyards are not
considered safe staging areas.
4) When outside all residents must congregate in the building specific
staging area. MEET AT TANG HALL W84 1ST FLOOR LOUNGE AND OR 24TH FLOOR
LOUNGE. This area must be away from the building to ensure the residents are
safe from the smoke and fire as well as the Fire Department and MIT
emergency response personnel are allowed easy access to the building. Never
block the entrance or main sidewalk.
5) No one is allowed to re-enter the building until the Fire Department
gives the all clear. City officials will work with MIT staff to return the
building to a safe environment as soon as possible and signal your return.
The City Fire Department grades each building on their success in quick and
safe evacuation, please help us show the city that MIT takes emergencies
seriously! Thank You all for your help.
Thank you
