[westgate-info] Westgate Town Hall Meeting Time
Hi Westgate,
You may or may not know that the Westgate Executive Committee hosts
monthly town hall meetings on the third Thursday of every month at
7:30pm. (Note: there will be no town hall meeting in December.) In
these meetings, the committee announces upcoming events and programs.
Residents can raise questions or concerns. Food is provided. The
meetings usually last between 30 minutes and an hour.
The committee wants to be sure that they are holding town hall
meetings at the best time for Westgate residents. It would be great if
you could follow the link below to an online survey and answer just a
few questions so that we can find a time that best fits the needs of
the community as a whole. If you have additional questions or
comments, please feel free to talk with me or Anna over e-mail at
westgate-gc
mit [dot] edu or by phone at 7-5895.

[westgate-info] Important Updates.
Hello all,
Town Hall Canceled
------------------
The Town Hall scheduled for Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 7:30pm has been
canceled. Please send any questions or concerns about facilities to Michael
(collinsm
mit [dot] edu) and Jason McKnight (jrmac
mit [dot] edu). Please send any
programming questions to WEC (westgate-officers
mit [dot] edu).
NO Smoking in the building
--------------------------
Just a reminder that as the weather gets colder, smoking is still NOT permitted
inside Westgate. Please go outside the building to smoke. Thank you to those
who already do so. Anyone discovered repeatedly smoking in the building could
be evicted. Thank you for your cooperation.
Fire Alarms
-----------
If you have a cooking fire AND have extinguished the source. Please do NOT open
your door to the hallway to air out the apartment. The smoke will trigger the
building alarm. Please just open your windows. Also, please be mindful of
your stoves, ovens, and items on the heaters. When leaving the apartment for
an hour, the day, or the holidays, please make sure that the heaters are clear
and that the stove top and ovens are OFF.
Wireless Connection
--------------------
Personal routers are not permitted due to their often negative impact on the
wireless connection for the buliding. However, if you should choose to have
one, it can be configured so as to NOT negatively impact the community. Please
contact Kevin Krsulich (kdk323
MIT [dot] EDU) to ensure that your router is not
negatively impacting the community. Offending routers run the risk of seizure.
Thank you for your help at improving the wireless for all in Westgate.
----------------------------------
If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Best of luck as you finish up the term and Happy Holidays!
Have a great day,
Jason

[westgate-info] Water Update.
Hello all,
Facilities replaced a heating coil in a water heater supplying hot water to
Westgate. The work is what has resulted in a drop in pressure, lack of hot
water, and discoloration of the water. I have been told that they have
completed the work. At this point you should be able to run the water for a
couple of minutes and then have the water run clear. Also the water pressure
issues should resolve themselves as well. Should you continue to experience
issues after a couple of minutes, please call x3-1500.
No notification was given to Michael or myself before hand. We will be working
to ensure notification in the future.
Have a great holiday,
Jason

Crime Alert to the MIT Community
Issued: Friday, November 21, 2008
*INCIDENT: *
On Thursday, November 20, 2008, at approximately 9:50 p.m., a female
student was the victim of an armed robbery on Pacific Street. This
incident occurred in the vicinity of Ashdown and Sidney and Pacific
dormitories.
SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
The victim describes the suspects as follows: two males, black, 19 -
20 years of age, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall. Both suspects
were wearing hoodies, one was a dark color and the other was grey. The
suspect with the grey hoodie motioned as if carrying a gun.
SUMMARY:
The victim was walking alone when approached by the two suspects. One
stayed at her back and the other faced her, and demanded her money.
The victim handed over her wallet which contained $10.00 cash, and
credit/debit cards.
According to the Cambridge Police, a similar armed robbery occurred 20
minutes prior on Pleasant Street approaching Kelly Road. The suspects
have the same description as described above. This location in
proximity to Pacific Street, is shown on the attached map.
*SUGGESTIONS:*
All members of the MIT community are asked to be alert and take
precautions. To minimize the opportunity for such incidents, the MIT
Police Department reminds community members to be vigilant while walking
throughout campus and surrounding areas during the day and at night.
Take appropriate precautions, such as walking with others and utilizing
the Safe Ride whenever possible.
Remain alert to your immediate surroundings. Be extra vigiliant while
talking on a cell
phone or listening to music. Safety Starts With You!
Anyone on campus should call the MIT Police Department at 617-253-1212,
utilize a blue light emergency telephone, or dial 100 from an Institute
telephone if they feel they are in danger at any time.

Discuss Westgate's Smoking Policy - Thurs Nov 19, 7:30pm
We will be discussing Westgate's smoking policy at our upcoming Town Hall meeting this Thursday, November 19th, at 7:30pm.
Residents on the first few floors of the high rise have reported that cigarette smoke has been drifting up into their apartments through their windows. This has led us to revisit Westgate's smoking policy. The current policy is as follows:
- No smoking inside any of the Westgate buildings (this includes both public spaces and private apartments)
- No smoking on low-rise balconies
- No smoking within the courtyard and playground
- No smoking within 15 feet of low-rise buildings
Based on the feedback of our residents in the first few floors of the high rise, we (the Graduate Coordinators) are proposing to the community that we extend the smoking policy so that in addition to these previous points, smoking is also not allowed within 15 feet of the high-rise building. However, we realize that this might be a complex issue with various perspectives, and as such we think that it is really important to gather feedback from the community, and we invite you to attend tomorrow's Town Hall meeting and let us know if you approve/disapprove of this addition to the smoking policy, or if you have different proposals or ideas.
I should also probably add that we won't be taking a vote or making a final decision at the Town Hall meeting. At this point we are still in the "information-gathering" stage. If you can't make it to the meeting but you have an opinion that you'd like to share, feel free to send me and Anna an e-mail at westgate-gc
mit [dot] edu.
Thanks,
Jason Walther
